Tampa Bay Ecosystems Research Demonstration Pilot Project - Agenda
On February 18, EPA Office of Research and Development (ORD) Staff will present updates and accomplishments on our partnership pilot project with Tampa Bay Estuary Program and Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council, our National Atlas work, and Decision Analysis Framework development. EIMSensor, a private company will also demonstrate potential interactive mapping, monitoring, and modeling tools. Please join us for this informative and exciting one-day meeting.
Thursday February 18th, 2010
9:00 AM - Tampa Bay Demonstration Project review and feedback (Marc Russell – ORD, National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory, Gulf Ecology Division)
We will present the map products of ecosystem functions and services for comments and feedback. Our mapping work is at a fairly local scale for local to regional decision maker’s use, with both a gridded and National Hydrography Dataset watershed accounting unit representation of ecosystem functions and resulting services. We present these maps in the context of our developing EPA webpage which in its current form is tailored to a public audience but will become more functional for managers and scientists in the upcoming years. We will also briefly present a summary of our planned research in the Tampa Bay region for 2010-2011 which is focused on filling knowledge gaps elucidated from our stakeholder workshop and prioritization work in 2009. Lastly we will present a summary of upcoming systems dynamic modeling work, the focus of our tool development for 2010-2011.
10:30 AM - Break
10:45 AM - National Atlas review and feedback (Anne Neale - ORD, National Exposure Research Laboratory, Landscape Ecology Branch)
We will be presenting the current vision, design, and status of the National Atlas of Ecosystem Services. The talk will describe many of the ecosystem service measurement metrics that will be available for visualization and download through the Atlas. The Atlas will contain broad scale information summarized by 12 digit hydrologic unit codes for the nation as well as more detailed information for large urban areas like Tampa. We are seeking critical feedback from stake holders as to 1) how useful is the product from their perspective, and 2) what could we add or change to make it better meet their needs.
We will present a demonstration of an interactive mapping dashboard interface that allows a user to create customized spatial queries of ecosystem services relevant to any decision. We will demonstrate the use of the tool and reporting system to compare ecosystem services change through time using a historical development case study, as well as incorporating value maps. We are seeking critical feedback from potential end-users as to 1) how useful is the product from their perspective, and 2) what could we add or change to make it better meet their needs.
3:30 PM - Break
3:45 PM - Decision Analysis Framework (Kelly Black - Neptune and Company, Inc.)
We will present an online framework called Decision Analysis for a Sustainable Environment, Economy, and Society (DASEES). The framework includes the steps for making an informed decision including: creating a Decision Landscape, determining Objectives and Management Options, comparing Options, selecting a Response, and finally applying Adaptive Management. We will walk through these steps and view an assortment of tools that assist in decision-making. As this framework is still in development, we will seek feedback regarding its structure and content so that we can adjust it to best meet the needs of its intended users.
5:00 PM - Adjourn
The meeting will take place at The Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council building:
4000 Gateway Centre Boulevard Pinellas Park, FL 33782-6138 (727) 570-5151
